At least 18 die as 49,000 people cross to Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco

The Guardian reports at least eighteen people died trying to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after roughly forty-nine thousand migrants crossed from Morocco within a matter of hours, some drowning and others caught in the crush at the border fence and swimming crossing points. The sudden influx overwhelmed the city of eighty-five thousand, with one local police association calling it a serious humanitarian crisis. The scale of the arrivals has triggered a political crisis for the government in Madrid and drawn sharp criticism from other European Union countries, including France and Italy.
