Over forty-nine thousand migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain's Ceuta enclave in twenty-four hours, according to Spanish authorities, with at least eighteen dying as they attempted the journey by swimming. Some spent hours in the water. The arrivals represent more than half the population of the enclave.
