Why federal court struck down Trump’s mass detention policy

A federal appeals court has struck down the Trump administration's mass detention policy for unauthorized immigrants. CalMatters reports the Ninth Circuit ruled that the government cannot treat people detained in the interior of the country the same way it treats those apprehended at the border. For more than thirty years, someone detained inside the United States has been entitled to a bond hearing and a chance to return home while deportation proceedings unfold. But the Trump administration stopped making that distinction—filling detention centers and clogging courts with thousands of release petitions. Even a Trump-appointed judge acknowledged that three decades of practice across administrations support this right. The case will almost certainly reach the Supreme Court.
