Bray Road in rural Wisconsin has earned a reputation as the hunting ground of one of America's most enduring cryptid legends. The first documented sighting dates to nineteen thirty-six, when a night watchman named Mark Schackelman reported seeing a six-foot-tall creature with black fur, pointed ears, and claws. Similar reports emerged again in the nineteen seventies, eighties, nineties, and early two-thousands, with witnesses describing a bipedal being up to eight feet tall that could also move on all fours, eating like a human and, in some cases, chasing vehicles. Atlas Obscura reports that journalist Linda S. Godfrey documented these accounts over four decades, interviewing witnesses and publishing several books on the Beast of Bray Road. While some theorize the creature might be an entirely new species or something supernatural, a more mundane explanation suggests the sightings could describe a black bear suffering from mange—a condition that causes hair loss and can give a bear a wolflike appearance and behavioral patterns consistent with the reported encounters.
