Convicted of ‘treason’ in Russia, journalist Darya Shipacheva was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Almost nothing is known about her case. Here’s what her friend revealed.

A Moscow court has sentenced 35-year-old journalist Darya Shipacheva to twelve years in prison on treason charges over a money transfer to Ukraine, Meduza reports. Shipacheva wrote on medicine and science for outlets including RBC, Takie Dela, and Forbes Woman, and was also known for organizing rallies in support of women's rights. She was detained at her Moscow apartment in spring twenty twenty-five and held first in Rostov-on-Don, then at Moscow's Lefortovo pretrial detention center, with almost no public details about her case since it remains classified. A friend who has corresponded with her throughout tells the independent outlet Bereg that Shipacheva is afraid conditions in prison will be worse than what she's already endured.
