Modeling Device Capabilities for Analytics
tech
Netflix reaches billions of devices—but they're not all created equal. Some can handle 4K and immersive audio; others top out at basic HD. Netflix Technology Blog reports the company has built a comprehensive device capability model to track that hardware diversity: available RAM, CPU cores, display resolution, codec support, and more. They organize this information using two types of data tables—one captures the latest state of each device and its capabilities, while another tracks distribution patterns over time, revealing what percentage of their global device fleet can handle advanced features like Ultra High Definition. That granular visibility lets Netflix make smarter decisions about which features to enable on which devices, ensuring both performance and reliability across its sprawling ecosystem.
