LessWrong is discussing a paper on a constraint that standard AI-acceleration models may overlook: 'parallelization technology'—the tools and methods to coordinate many researchers tackling the same problem. When AI automates AI research, conventional models assume you can simply multiply the researcher population on the same hardware, creating runaway recursive self-improvement. But not all research can be perfectly divided up. Some processes are inherently sequential: you can't simultaneously test all improvements to a robot factory, and a one-trillion-parameter AI model has vastly more possible configurations than any amount of compute could explore. The paper sketches three scenarios—parallelization tech improving as fast as research inputs leaves an explosion possible, slower advancement means a slower explosion, and merely sustaining exponential growth means acceleration without singularity. The upshot is that an intelligence explosion may face a fundamental bottleneck that earlier timelines overlooked.
