Per Hackaday, one maker wanted to automate his night light's brightness control—a task that turned out far more involved than expected. The unlabeled components, underpowered supply, and tight physical space meant he had to custom-build a circuit board with an ATtiny85 microcontroller and a transistor to physically press the button. Now, when his home automation system powers on the plug, the device automatically adjusts the brightness and returns to sleep.
