The avocado's sex life has run on the same schedule for 42 million years

Per Boing Boing, avocado flowers have executed the same reproductive routine for the past forty-two million years. Each flower opens twice over two days: first in its female phase to receive pollen, then in its male phase to release it. A single gene controls this sequence, and that gene has remained unchanged throughout those millions of years.
