‘We stared into an abyss’: the heroes battling to tame France’s ‘megafire’

A wildfire dubbed France's "megafire" has scorched forty-two thousand hectares of forestland west of Bordeaux, The Guardian reports, forcing the evacuation of the village of Le Porge and roughly two hundred thousand people from their homes. Firefighters, soldiers, police and volunteers have been battling the blaze since it broke out last week, and though it's now contained, new outbreaks continue to flare up daily, straining emergency crews to their limit.
