First Australian mass mortality event suspected as deadly bird flu virus rapidly escalates among native birds

A suspected mass mortality event is underway off the South Australian coast, just six weeks after H5N1 bird flu first arrived in the country. The Guardian reports that helicopter surveillance on Saturday found forty-nine dead greater crested terns and thirty-five more sick birds on Baudin Rocks, near Robe. Authorities say more than eighty dead and sick birds were spotted on the rocks in total.
