Boxer secures Tuvalu’s first Commonwealth Games medal without winning a bout

sports

Tuvalu has claimed its first-ever Commonwealth Games medal, the Guardian reports, through an unconventional path. Twenty-year-old Tarona Taafaki received a bye into the semi-finals of the women's seventy-five kilogram boxing category, where she lost on an unanimous points decision to India's Lovlina Borgohain. Because the Commonwealth Games awards bronze medals to all semi-final losers, Taafaki's loss secured Tuvalu's historic first medal—without her winning a single bout.
