‘Constitutional coup’ claims as Zimbabwean senate approves extending presidential term
politics
Zimbabwe's parliament voted seventy-five to four to approve constitutional amendments that would extend presidential terms from five to seven years. The change would allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa, eighty-three years old, to remain in office until twenty thirty. While the government says longer terms will bring stability, opposition figures have denounced it as a constitutional coup, arguing it further entrenches presidential power. According to The Guardian, the amendments still need approval from the lower house.
