Open letters about AI development
ai
Three competing visions for AI safety clashed in open letters this week. A July twenty-fourth letter signed by two hundred thirty-five companies including OpenAI and NVIDIA argued that open-weight models are safer than closed ones, since broader scrutiny catches vulnerabilities faster. Anthropic disagreed publicly three days later, warning that open models risk being misused by hostile governments for cyberattacks, and calling for restrictions on large-scale distillation. Then thirteen hundred twenty-four employees from frontier AI labs — including Anthropic researchers themselves — signed another letter on July twenty-eighth asking the U.S. government to help pace accelerating automated AI development. Per Simon Willison's Weblog, the competing visions reflect both genuine disagreement about what keeps AI safe and rising competitive pressure to move faster.
