Agnostic Meaning: Betting on Others

LessWrong user warner proposes a framework called 'Agnostic Meaning' for people struggling to find life's purpose. Rather than getting stuck trying to figure it all out, warner suggests placing a 'bet' that someone else will solve these bigger questions, while you focus on creating conditions for more people to work on them—through poverty reduction, education, or similar efforts. The reasoning draws on historical patterns: important discoveries are often made independently by multiple people at roughly the same time, suggesting that circumstances and pool size matter more than individual genius. So expanding the number of people with resources and freedom to think deeply about meaning and progress might actually accelerate that progress itself. It's a framework designed for people new to Effective Altruism or caught between worldviews—a way to move forward without first having all the answers.
