‘Constitutional coup’ claims as Zimbabwe senate approves extending presidential term

politics

According to The Guardian, Zimbabwe's parliament has voted to extend presidential terms from five to seven years. The upper house approved the constitutional amendment seventy-five to four, a change that would allow eighty-three-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office through twenty thirty. While the government argues the longer terms bring stability, opposition figures have labeled the amendment a 'constitutional coup,' viewing it as a move that further tightens the president's grip on power.
