A mountain man spent 25 years eating the livers of the people who killed his wife

other

In eighteen forty-seven, a Crow hunting party killed the wife of John Garrison Johnston, a former Navy deserter turned mountain man in Montana Territory. According to historian Andrew Mehane Southerland, Johnston spent the next quarter century on a quest for revenge. He killed and scalped more than three hundred Crow Indians, and in a grim ritual of vengeance, consumed their livers. As his reputation grew alongside his collection of scalps, Johnston became a figure of fear across the frontier — a mountain man whose grief had hardened into legend.
