This Texas coal mine will soon be home to a 1.2GW solar farm

business

Construction is underway for Big Rooter Power, a one point two gigawatt solar farm in Bremond, Texas, per Grist. The one point seven billion dollar project sits on land next to an operating coal mine and coal plant, both still running—an unusual pairing in the nation's coal-to-solar sector, where most projects repurpose abandoned mines. Brownfield solar has become an attractive strategy partly because it sidesteps rural opposition to placing panels on prime farmland. The installation will include battery storage and new transmission lines, with the first phase expected to come online in twenty twenty-eight.
