Identity beyond citizenship: What remains when the State refuses to recognise you?

Per Global Voices, stateless people gathered in Malta for a three-day conference called Hearing and Healing, addressing a central question: who are we when the state refuses to recognize us? Participants from different communities—all denied citizenship despite deep roots in their societies—shared experiences revealing a painful contradiction: a person may be born in a country, speak its language, and contribute to it for a lifetime, yet be told they legally don't belong. The gathering underscored that while governments control legal status, identity runs far deeper—shaped by family, culture, language, and shared history. For millions of stateless people worldwide, the struggle is not simply for a passport, but for recognition that they have always belonged.
