Wildfires around Spokane, Washington's second-largest city, have forced 60,000 people to evacuate and destroyed at least 600 homes, businesses, and other structures, authorities said Sunday. The blazes have burned about eight point two square miles in and around the city and remain uncontained. The Guardian reports they're part of a broader wave of fires across the western US — statewide, roughly three hundred ninety square miles have burned, straining federal, state, and local firefighting agencies.
