Central and southern Europe brace for heatwave – Europe live

A heatwave that swept western Europe last week is now moving eastward, bringing extreme temperatures near forty degrees Celsius to central and southern Europe. The Guardian reports the heat is creating an energy crunch across the region, particularly in Hungary, where the drying Danube River has forced a shutdown of most of the country's sole nuclear power plant — the first time in forty-four years. Water levels on the Danube are projected to fall further, and the plant is expected to be completely powered down later this week.
