Portable breast ultrasound enables imaging between cancer screening exams

Physics World reports that MIT researchers have developed a portable 3D ultrasound system to detect breast cancers between routine screenings. These interval cancers develop quickly in the gaps between mammograms and account for roughly twenty to thirty percent of all breast cancer cases. The system, called 3D PURE, excels at spotting abnormalities in dense breast tissue where mammography performs poorly. In trials, novice users could repeatedly position the device accurately after brief training, suggesting it could help close the gap in cancer detection that opens between routine screening appointments.
