How America is adapting to climate extremes

Communities across the U.S. are shifting from disaster recovery to proactive climate adaptation, Axios reports. In Texas Hill Country, newly installed flood sirens helped warn residents during July's floods, which killed three people but avoided a repeat of last year's catastrophic flooding that killed more than one hundred thirty. Florida, Louisiana, and California have likewise invested in hardened power grids, stronger building codes, and drought measures, while one Florida community that buried its power lines has weathered four hurricanes with little damage. As one expert tells Axios, most U.S. infrastructure was built for a climate that no longer exists — and the bigger challenge now is preparing for the next disaster, not just rebuilding after the last one.
