Trump promises new Iran talks as Tehran touts Hormuz shipping deal with Oman | First Thing

According to The Guardian, U.S. President Trump said he called off an imminent attack on Iran as part of a push for a new agreement. Trump claimed talks would happen on Monday, and said Tehran must 'rapidly make a deal' that would lead to the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat. Iran, however, reported a different path forward: the Iranian foreign ministry said a deal was close with Oman over a new shipping route through the strait. According to Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, an understanding was nearing on 'a route acceptable to both sides—neither the northern route nor the southern route—but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security.' The reports suggest diverging approaches to a shared challenge.
