Confused about carbon capture? Experts explain why we need different types

Heavy industries like steel and concrete production remain locked into fossil fuels—renewable electricity simply isn't scaled yet to replace them at the pace these sectors need. The Conversation reports that carbon dioxide can be captured before it escapes into the atmosphere. Some is used to make sustainable concrete and aircraft fuel; the rest is stored permanently in what's called carbon capture, utilisation and storage. The scale challenge is real: only seventy-seven such facilities exist worldwide, capturing just zero point zero one percent of global emissions, with each costing between three hundred million and one billion dollars. Tackling climate change also requires direct air capture—removing carbon dioxide straight from the air to address the legacy of past emissions. Industrial decarbonization and carbon removal need to advance in parallel.
