Ceuta leader accuses Morocco over ‘atrocity’ of mass border crossing

More than fifty thousand people attempted to cross into Ceuta, a Spanish enclave of eighty-four thousand residents in North Africa, in what officials are describing as an extraordinary influx. The Guardian reports that Ceuta's leader, Juan Jesús Vivas, says Morocco either orchestrated the crossing or, at the very least, encouraged and permitted it. Spain's interior ministry states that forty-eight thousand three hundred of those arrivals were sent back to Morocco. The incident has sparked a political crisis within the European Union, with some member states placing blame on Spain even as Spain demands European solidarity.
