Life-size sand sculptures once lined the Atlantic City boardwalk

entertainment

Atlantic City's boardwalk once featured buskers known as sand men, Boing Boing recounts, who sculpted life-size and larger figures from saltwater-soaked sand in high relief. Their creations ranged from the religious—Christ on the cross—to the dramatic and mythological: a slain soldier beside his fallen horse, lions, snakes, and a mermaid. They worked for tips, creating art as fleeting as the medium itself.
