A record-breaking eight Pulitzer awardees disclosed AI use this year

Nieman Lab reports that a record eight Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists disclosed using artificial intelligence in their reporting this year—the highest number since disclosure became required in twenty twenty-four. Marjorie Miller, administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, tells Nieman Lab the journalism industry has shifted from skepticism toward AI to "a clearer understanding of what uses might be appropriate." The Wall Street Journal used AI to summarize thousands of pages of county records when reporting on flooding in Central Texas, allowing reporters to focus on the most relevant documents. The Minnesota Star Tribune turned to ChatGPT to translate Faux Cyrillic, a Russian typography code, found in a shooter's journal to inform their investigation. But in both cases, human journalists reviewed everything AI flagged or generated. Looking ahead, the Pulitzers will add an AI disclosure question to next year's book entries, per Nieman Lab, signaling that as AI tools evolve, the journalism world will keep working out where they belong.
