Some speed-reading apps make big claims. But how fast can humans actually read?

Speed-reading apps and courses promise to dramatically accelerate how fast you can read—some claiming rates of over a thousand words per minute. But per The Conversation, cognitive science tells a different story. Research shows adults reading non-fiction actually read at one hundred seventy-five to three hundred words per minute, with fiction slightly faster. Speed-reading advocates dismiss this as inefficiency, but it reflects how our eyes actually work: they move in rapid jumps called saccades, interrupted by pauses called fixations, and we only extract information during those pauses. Claims that you can process ten to fourteen words in a single fixation contradict the evidence—we typically perceive far fewer letters at a time. Studies of readers who took speed-reading courses found they were simply skimming, with comprehension declining as their speed increased. Apps like Bionic Reading and Spritz claim special text formatting can overcome these limits, but research consistently shows they don't improve speed and often reduce comprehension. A computer model of reading confirmed what neuroscience already knows: even with perfect eye movements, the gains are marginal—and eliminating eye movements entirely comes at the cost of significant comprehension loss. If you want to actually understand what you're reading, you're stuck at around three hundred words per minute.
