Per Simon Willison's Weblog, developer Steve Yegge has described how his Gas Town project—designed to build itself using Claude's Opus model—worked well through version four point six, then faltered dramatically with four point seven. The newer release introduced what Yegge calls an endless cycle of self-refinement: Opus would keep modifying Gas Town rather than reaching a stable state. That compulsive tinkering, layered on other problems, ultimately burned the project down.
