Sketching Temporary Circuits with a Light-Triggered Floquet Topological Insulator

Researchers have experimentally demonstrated that light can temporarily create a topological insulator state, reports Hackaday. The work, published in Nature Physics, shows femtosecond laser pulses inducing a Floquet topological state in SnTe semiconductor material. Unlike conventional semiconductors that are permanently modified, topological insulators can be temporarily controlled with light — a concept theorized since nineteen eighty-five but never before optically demonstrated. The induced state persists only while the femtosecond pulses are maintained. The breakthrough opens possibilities for light-triggered circuit technologies, though researchers stress the field remains in fundamental research phase.
