Three lions die of suspected heatstroke at Tokyo zoo as Japan swelters

world

Three lions have died of suspected heatstroke at a Tokyo zoo, with others now receiving treatment, a zoo spokesperson said on Tuesday. The Guardian reports that most of the zoo's sixteen lions have struggled to cope with this summer's high humidity, as Japan endures scorching heat, with parts of the country recently hitting forty degrees Celsius. Japan sweltered through its hottest summer on record last year, and the recent heat has been severe enough to qualify for the country's new "cruelly hot day" designation.
