AI Is Being Used to Boost Medicaid Enrollment, but Not Without Concerns

California's Kern Family Health Care uses an AI agent called Angelica to handle Medicaid renewal calls—work that would otherwise require forty full-time employees. KFF Health News reports the health plan invested roughly three hundred seventy thousand dollars in Careforce software, which has made over eight hundred thousand member contacts since deploying last year. The AI speaks more than thirty languages and conducts full conversations to help people navigate the renewal process, which is becoming far more complex under new federal rules requiring Medicaid members to renew twice yearly instead of once yearly beginning in twenty twenty-seven. While health researchers have raised concerns about algorithmic bias and patient cherry-picking, California regulators say they're closely monitoring these tools and have reminded healthcare entities to comply with privacy and security rules.
