How To Give Everyday People A Say In AI Governance

ai

Noema Magazine reports that more than two hundred economists and AI researchers — including seventeen Nobel laureates — have warned that AI could become radically more powerful within a decade, with mass job displacement among the risks. Yet their call to action addresses only economists, policymakers, and tech leaders. Ordinary people are excluded from decisions about a technology that will reshape their lives. The author argues we have the infrastructure to fix this immediately: ChatGPT has over a billion monthly users; Gemini and Meta AI have similar reach. We could launch a global public consultation through those platforms right now — asking what people want from AI, what it should never do, and who should govern it — then synthesize responses into a global AI constitution. The technology exists; we're just not using it.
