Jordan convenes emergency meeting over Israel’s potential to ‘trigger religious conflict’

Per The Guardian, Jordan is convening an emergency meeting of foreign ministers from across the Arab and Islamic world to address what it calls an "imminent" threat of an Israeli takeover of the al-Aqsa mosque and Dome of the Rock compound in Jerusalem—two of Islam's holiest sites. The warning comes after a pattern of government-backed incursions by Jewish religious extremists on the compound, which violate a status quo treaty overseen by Jordan that restricts prayer at the site to Muslims alone. The Jordanian government says this escalation carries the potential to trigger a religious conflict.
