Trump throws Mike Johnson a lifeline on the SAVE Act

politics

Speaker Mike Johnson met with President Trump on Thursday and emerged with two significant wins. Trump publicly urged House Republicans to stop blocking procedural votes—a move that could help the chamber resume normal floor operations. Johnson also formally transmitted the bipartisan SAVE America Act housing bill to the White House, signaling confidence it will become law after Trump had refused to sign it just a day earlier. The SAVE Act has become a major source of tension within the GOP, according to Axios. The House has passed it three times, but the bill remains stalled amid disagreements between Trump, Senate Republicans, and some moderates in Johnson's own conference. Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska told Axios it's time to move forward: 'He should sign it. This is a win, and the House already voted on this SAVE Act three times.' Yet other Republicans warn that repeated procedural standoffs are preventing members from voting on critical agenda items—leaving Johnson managing a deeply fractured conference.
