Trump administration asks OpenAI to limit next model release over security concerns

According to Axios, the Trump administration has asked OpenAI to restrict the release of its next model, GPT five-point-six, to only government-approved partners before any wider rollout. The White House's Office of the National Cyber Director and Office of Science and Technology Policy made the request over security concerns. This is the first time the U.S. government has preemptively asked an American AI company to limit a model launch. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the arrangement in a memo to employees, saying the company doesn't view this as a long-term approach. The request follows Anthropic's recent revocation of government access to its frontier models, Fable five and Mythos five. Altman told Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that GPT five-point-six has Mythos-like capabilities and could be released in a couple of weeks, pending government testing and approval.
