Around five hundred forty million years ago, the Cambrian explosion transformed ocean life — most major animal groups appeared within just thirteen to twenty-five million years. Scientists have long debated what sparked this diversification. Now researchers examining fossilized feces, or coprolites, propose an unexpected mechanism: as ancient animals evolved more sophisticated digestive systems, they produced far more fecal matter, which redistributed organic nutrients throughout the oceans. This nutrient recycling helped support larger animal populations and more complex food webs, creating a feedback loop that accelerated evolutionary diversification. The research complements other explanations like rising oxygen levels and emerging predator-prey dynamics, but it highlights an often-overlooked ecological process — animal waste might literally be the reason complex life took off on Earth.
