Naplan results 2026: reading and writing worsens in Australian schools as one in three students fail to meet benchmarks

According to the Guardian, Australia's Naplan results reveal a concerning trend in the nation's schools: reading and writing scores have declined across nearly every age group, with one in three students failing to meet standard benchmarks. The tests, administered in March to one point two million students in years three, five, seven, and nine, measure literacy and numeracy proficiency. Education minister Jason Clare acknowledged the results show real challenges, though numeracy performance offered some encouragement.
