These 3D-printed objects can tell you if they’re being used properly

Objects that change their appearance to tell you if you're using them correctly—without a single electronic component—are now possible thanks to a new 3D-printing system from MIT researchers. The system, called ShiftLens, layers specially arranged optical lenses over a patterned surface so that when you twist, press, or slide the object, different images or patterns become visible. Per MIT News, this technology could create chemical bottles that turn green to signal a secure cap, weather-resistant warning signs, or shipping packages that alert you if fasteners came loose during transport.
