Chorus-Reinterpretation Country Songs

entertainment

According to LessWrong, many country songs use the same literary device: a repeating chorus that gets new meaning from each verse as life progresses. Trisha Yearwood's 'She's In Love With The Boy' pairs a father's objection to his daughter's boyfriend with the revelation that her own father once said the same about him. 'Five More Minutes' by Scotty McCreery carries the same phrase across a lifetime — childhood at a creek, a football field goodbye, and a grandfather's deathbed. The pattern appears elsewhere, like Harry Chapin's 'Cat's in the Cradle,' but thrives in country music.
