Russia appears to be carrying out one of its biggest VPN blocking campaigns in recent memory. Here’s what we know.
world
Russia is conducting one of its largest campaigns to block virtual private networks in recent memory, according to Meduza. Multiple VPN services including Paper VPN, VPN Legend, and GaMMa VPN have experienced outages as authorities targeted IP addresses and subnets used by major hosting providers. A senior Anti-Corruption Foundation leader called it the biggest attack on VPN services in history. Experts suggest the campaign's effectiveness stems from user-tracking apps that give authorities massive databases of IP addresses, enabling large-scale blocking operations. This mirrors a month-long assault on VPN services from earlier in the summer.
