Smart clothes will soon be on sale. But regulations are needed to prevent a new waste mountain

Smart textiles with embedded electronics—socks that track your running form, pyjamas that detect early signs of cancer—will soon be on sale. But per The Conversation UK, these innovations come with a waste problem as vexing as the technology itself. Electronic waste is Europe's fastest-growing waste stream, with sixty-two million tonnes discarded in twenty twenty-two. Textile waste globally stands at ninety-two million tonnes today and is expected to reach one hundred thirty-four million by twenty thirty. Smart textiles introduce a troubling hybrid waste, mixing metals, polymers, and electronics in ways that traditional recycling cannot safely handle, trapping valuable materials like silver and rare-earth elements. The solution is engineered, not mysterious: design-for-disassembly, biodegradable conductors, digital material passports, and strict durability standards are all being developed now. But without regulatory mandates on recyclability and chemical safety, smart clothing risks becoming just another mountain in our growing e-waste landscape.
