A study of more than seven hundred fifty census tracts across nine counties found that five communities in the Philadelphia area showed the worst asthma outcomes, while areas with more green space had significantly lower levels of toxic pollutants like diesel particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. The Conversation reports the region ranked seventeenth worst among U.S. metropolitan areas for year-round particle pollution—and researchers say the problem reflects deeper urban planning decisions about zoning and infrastructure that concentrated industrial activity and highway traffic in specific neighborhoods, many experiencing long-term disinvestment and historical discrimination.
