Advanced Mini-laboratories Automate Space Station Research

science

The International Space Station now runs a growing fleet of automated mini-labs that handle the heavy lifting for space research. Per NASA News, Redwire's Advanced Space Experiment Processors—or ADSEPs—free up astronauts' limited time by running multiple studies simultaneously, each facility hosting three or four compact cassette labs. The latest model, ADSEP-4, includes imagery capabilities. Since twenty seventeen, these systems have supported two dozen investigations, with the newest focus on growing seed crystals in microgravity for pharmaceutical breakthroughs—particularly cancer research. NASA News reports that the unique space environment allows crystals to grow larger and purer than on Earth, potentially yielding more stable medicines and entirely new therapeutics.
