Top Democrats set aside qualms and embrace progressive Abdul El-Sayed

politics

The Guardian reports that progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Democratic Senate primary on Wednesday. Top Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, are now backing the former public health official despite having expressed reservations about his candidacy. Michigan is crucial to Democratic hopes of controlling the Senate in November's midterms. Winning the state would give them a path to blocking Donald Trump's legislative agenda and judicial nominees in his final two years. El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers, who previously lost a Michigan Senate race by a narrow margin two years ago.
