An eighteen eighty-five acting manual called the Delsarte System of Dramatic Expression aimed to document the full range of human body movements and expressions. Boing Boing reports that American actress Genevieve Stebbins wrote it after studying under Steele MacKaye, who had learned the technique directly from its creator, French singer and orator François Delsarte. Though Delsarte died in eighteen seventy-one without publishing his method, his technique was documented in Stebbins' manual.
