Now Jetstar wants to charge extra for overhead bags. What are your options?

business

From February 2027, Jetstar will charge extra to store luggage in overhead lockers; one underseat bag remains free. The airline frames this as offering choice while keeping base fares low. However, The Conversation reports a more complicated picture. Psychology research indicates that accumulating payment decisions create 'choice overload' rather than customer empowerment. And operationally, if most passengers pay for overhead storage, the promised priority boarding loses meaning—passengers still compete for locker space, so efficiency gains may not materialize. Jetstar also hasn't stated base fares will actually fall. For Australian travelers, the timing raises another concern: Australia lacks the strong passenger-rights protections Europe guarantees, and a new Aviation Consumer Ombuds Scheme to address complaints remains stalled in Parliament.
