Inside the nearly 5-month labor lockout at an Indiana refinery

Grist reports that BP locked out approximately 800 unionized workers at its Whiting, Indiana refinery over a contract dispute. The workers rejected BP's proposal to freeze wages, weaken safety protections, and expand artificial intelligence monitoring of employees—a rare hardline tactic in the refining industry. Nearly five months into the standoff, locked-out workers' families have drastically cut household expenses, while BP announced quarterly profits of five point seven billion dollars, more than double the previous quarter. The dispute has also coincided with safety incidents including flaring events and a power outage that spiked regional gas prices.
