When sex education funding is taken away, young people lose a safe space
politics
Per The 19th, on June 26 the Trump administration terminated federal teen pregnancy prevention grants nationwide, immediately stripping Children's Aid of nearly a million dollars in annual funding and eliminating nine positions. The organization has served New York City for over 170 years. Across the city, three organizations lost combined funding of four point three million dollars that served more than 19,000 young people in predominantly Black and Latino communities. The program provided medically accurate sexual health education and peer-led training. The administration's new criteria emphasize abstinence-only education and focus on marriage and parenthood, with minimal reference to preventing sexually transmitted infections. Democratic lawmakers are suing to restore the funding, arguing the administration severed crucial relationships and support systems in underserved communities.
